Natural Red Food Coloring

This natural red food coloring is simple and only takes one ingredient. My dad grew pomegranates in the backyard and he froze a ton of the pomegranates. When I saw these vibrant red fruits in the freezer, I knew I had to make good use out of it so then I thought, why not make natural food dye.

I don’t trust the chemicals found in the food coloring that are found on most shelves. I figured why not go the natural route! Mother nature provides so many colors on her plant-based palette.

Ingredients used for natural red food coloring

Method

In a small sauce pan add 1 1/2 cups of pomegranate seeds in 1/2 cup of water. Bring water to a boil. Then bring it down to simmer for 45 minutes.

The water should be a deep red color. Take a mesh strainer to drain all the water into a container. The liquid is natural dye.

It’s very simple and easy. It just takes a little bit of patience for the vibrant red color you desire. You can cook it even longer if you are wanting an even deeper red color.

I used the mesh strainer to strain the coloring into a bowl then I stored it in a glass container in the ridge.

These are so delicious. Not only is it comforting food, it’s comforting in thought knowing that the red is all natural. No chemicals found here! The pomegranate seeds does not interfere with the flavor so there is nothing to worry about.

I stored the natural food dye in the fridge in a dropper container. The dropper makes it easy to measure it out into recipes like the vegan peppermint bark recipe.
