Portobello steak is a great vegan alternative if you’re craving something like meat. This recipe is 100% plant-based. You can eat it like steak or put it in a bun and enjoy it like a burger patty. It’s very versatile and bursting with flavor.

What you’ll need is the following ingredients:

  • Portobello Mushrooms
  • Olive Oil
  • Braggs Liquid Aminos or Soy Sauce
  • Steak Sauce or BBQ Sauce
  • Steak Rub Seasoning
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Black Pepper
  • Lemon Juice

What I do first is cut the stem of the portobello mushroom so that it is just flat. I rubbed the mushrooms with a little bit of oil and sprinkled both sides of the mushrooms with the seasoning.

I then take a container or ziplock freezer bag and add the Braggs liquid aminos or soy sauce, steak sauce and lemon juice. I mix it all together and then add the portobello steaks in there to help it marinate. I let it sit in there for at least 5 minutes while I heat up a pan or skillet with oil.

Then when the skillet or pan is heated on medium-high heat, cook the Portobello Steak for 5 minutes on each side. Turn the heat down if needed, especially for the second steak to not burn it.

Put the oven on broil, brush more steak or bbq sauce onto the mushrooms and place in the oven for 10 minutes (flipping over halfway through.)

If you have leftover marinade or steak sauce, drizzle it on top of the steak and serve. As shown in the photo, I served it with a cauliflower puree.

I like using this sugar free steak sauce from Primal Kitchen. You can also get it on The Plant Based Palette shop. Head on over to the shop through the tab up above!

Servings 2 Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 portobello mushrooms
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 4 Tbsp steak sauce or bbq sauce
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp steak rub seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • Cut the stems of the portobello mushrooms to make them flat. Rub each mushroom lightly with olive oil and sprinkle a bit of all the seasonings on each side.
  • In a ziplock freezer bag or a container, add steak or bbq sauce, lemon juice and liquid aminos or soy sauce. Add remainders of seasoning into the container and shake together. Add in the mushrooms to allow it to sit and marinate for at least 5 minutes.
  • Heat up an oiled pan or skillet on medium-high heat. Cook mushrooms for 5-7 minutes on each side. Press down on the mushrooms with spatula and a little bit of leftover marinade sauce onto of the mushrooms (leave extra for serving). Turn down heat if needed. Careful not to burn them.
  • Turn the oven on broil. Brush mushrooms with more steak or bbq sauce. Place in oven for 10 minutes (flip halfway through). The broiling part is optional, but helps to create a more meat-like texture.
  • Cut into strips and pour some of the marinade or steak sauce on top. Enjoy!
